@school curriculum: 6-word memoir

after the dance anywhere (in 6 words)

suddenly, everything was moving and different
feeling the dance as globe wiggled
why sit when there is salsa?
boom boom in da room room
it was fun to move around
shake rattle and roll rumpus fest
no music we just shook it
sitting at my desk pencil dance

In 2006 Smith Magazine challenged its readers to write a memoir in six words. Inspired by Hemingway’s response to a similar earlier challenge he answered “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Proof that a lot can be told with just 6 words.

Six-word memoirs have become a powerful tool to inspire conversation around a bigger idea and a simple way for individuals to break the ice. Each year many additional categories for writing have been created. There is one specific to teens and another for classroom projects.

Start a new category after the dance anywhere and send us your 6 words!

After the dance, stop for a moment to reflect upon your unique moment of dance anywhere. Consider counterpoints:

local vs global – still vs. moving – slow motion vs. fast – in unison vs. free form – salsa vs. texas two step – folkloric vs. hip hop – jazz vs. waltz – ballet vs. zumba – cha cha cha vs. tango
