When Peter Cheng found out about dance anywhere® the evening of March 28th, he knew he had to participate. “Without a minute’s hesitation, I prepped my tripod and costume and decided to do a site specific contemporary improvisation at our office building during lunch”. Cheng says, “It turned out *really* well!”
As the clock struck noon, Cheng left his office in the Old Pac Bell building, San Francisco for his “Lunch Break”. His improvisation, entitled “Lunch Break” is a series of highly kinetic modern contemporary movements performed in a suit and tie. Cheng glides across the sober grey backdrop, seemingly breaking free of his surroundings.
Cheng says that he decided to dance anywhere® because dance is a huge part of his life, but not many people know this side of him, since he works full- time. Cheng says “dance anywhere® was a perfect opportunity as an emerging choreographer/artist/dancer to create something passing (but forever encapsulated in film), in sync with others in downtown San Francisco who were performing just blocks away at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts”.
Peter Cheng is a natural born mover, dancer, and choreographer.
“As a dance artist I find beauty in highly technical dance forms such as modern dance and contemporary ballet. I draw my inspiration from various artists such as Nacho Duato, NDT, Alonzo King, and most recently Guillaume Cote of the National Ballet of Canada. My works tend to lean towards the kinesthetic side, incorporating elements of ballet, modern dance, straight and curved lines, as well as fluid movements of the spine…”
Cheng holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of California at Santa Barbara (2008), and trained in Lines Ballet’s Pre-Professional Summer Intensive Program (2006) and ODC’s Professional Audition Workshop (2006). He is currently living in San Francisco.
He looks forward to performing for dance anywhere® again. “I love that worldwide, people celebrate movement in any way, shape, or form. It’s such a beautiful way to come together – movement increases endorphins, allows expression, and is unique to every body.”
